Jamestown Elementary School PTA

Resolution Endorsing 2104 Arlington School Bond and Related Matters

WHEREAS Arlington has consistently supported renewal of its schools through overwhelming passage of school bonds since 1988;

WHEREAS Arlington Public Schools are facing an unprecedented growth in student population;

WHEREAS passage of the 2014 school bond referendum would provide the funding to finish the McKinley Elementary School addition, renovate and expand Abingdon Elementary School, build additional elementary school seats in south Arlington, plan for additional middle school capacity, and expand capacity at Washington-Lee High School;

WHEREAS the Jamestown PTA is concerned that the 2014 school bond referendum does not provide funding to construct new middle school capacity;

AND WHEREAS the Jamestown PTA is concerned that enrollment at Williamsburg Middle School is expected to exceed the capacity of that facility in the years before new middle school capacity can be constructed;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Jamestown PTA does endorse the $105.78 Million school bond referendum to fund needed school improvement projects that will appear on the ballot on November 4, 2014;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we call on the Board and leadership of Arlington Public Schools to select the location of new middle school capacity in North Arlington and announce effective measures to address near-term overcrowding at Williamsburg Middle School no later than December 2014;

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that we encourage the Board of Arlington Public Schools to initiate and support a public discussion of measures to assure adequate funding for future public school capital and operational needs.
